High-End Audio, Part 3: Amplifiers To Make Your Speakers Sing

Bring Out All the Emotion and Nuance in Music with McIntosh Amplifiers

This is the third of a series of blogs on one of our favorite solutionshigh-end audio. In the first two, we’ve gone from discussing the endpoint – the speakers that create the sound – to the sources, like streaming, vinyl, and CDs. In this final installment, we’re going to go into the middle – the amplifier, the piece of equipment that creates the current to drive the speaker.

Power amplifiers are what make speakers come alive. Speakers are not all the same, and some amplifiers make far better partners for some speakers than others. Some speakers are relatively efficient, requiring smaller amounts of current to achieve high sound levels and clarity, and some only sound their best with copious quantities of undistorted power.

One of our favorite amplifier brands is McIntosh. The company’s amplifiers are legendary, having powered the famous Woodstock concert of the late 1960s. Their build quality and longevity let them be passed down from one generation to the next, like a classic vintage automobile. Let’s dive a little deeper into McIntosh amplifiers and how they can amp up the sound system in your listening room.

Preamplifiers

We did say amplifiers, but some audiophiles want separate components for every link in the audio chain. The preamplifier serves as the hub of a two-channel audio system to feed an undistorted audio signal to the amplifier. Modern Mcintosh preamps can take many forms, from tube-based to solid-state, and all analog (for purists) to ones with the latest digital inputs, including HDMI.

Analog technology doesn't change much, but digital is constantly evolving. Some McIntosh models feature an upgradeable digital module that updates digital connections and circuitry while keeping the investment in the high-end analog electronics. Preamps like the C53 do it all with a bevy of analog and digital inputs for any two-channel system and a full solid-state design. For those that love the warmth of tubes to smooth out brighter speakers, the C2700 and C1100 preamps provide that rich base.

Amplifiers

McIntosh amplifier separates are all about brute force power with equal doses of finesse. Some amplifiers can provide the juice to power-hungry speakers but can also distort when taxed. McIntosh amps offer clean power for the most inefficient speakers all day long, but not at the expense of quality.

From solid-state models like the MC462 with an astounding 450 watts/channel to monoblock vacuum tube amps with more power than tubes are known for, there's a McIntosh amp to power any speaker.

Besides the elevated performance levels, these amps are a visual showpiece for your home in Park city and surrounding areas, with exposed tubes, machined knobs, and the classic McIntosh faceplate and blue-lit analog power meters. If you want to get the most of what your speakers can do, McIntosh separate amplifiers are the way to go.

Integrated Amplifiers and Receivers

Some audiophiles love great sound quality, but they might not want to devote the space to an all-separates system. In some cases, significant others will use the system and appreciate a more straightforward setup. But simpler doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice sound quality.

McIntosh integrated amplifiers combine a high-quality preamp with amplifiers, where you only need to add a source like a streaming device (or smart TV), turntable, or CD player. One McIntosh integrated amp that sacrifices nothing to simplification is the MA9000, which combines all the analog and modern digital inputs you need with a massive 300 watts/channel amplifier. Other models like the MA352 combine the smoothness of a tube preamp with the reliable and ample power of solid-state amplifiers.

If you still listen to favorite radio stations, McIntosh still makes a receiver with an excellent AM/FM tuner. The MAC7200 brings the all-in-one convenience of a receiver to high-end audio performance. With both Moving Coil and Moving Magnet phone inputs, an array of analog and digital inputs, and 200 watts/channel of power, the MAC7200 makes a fine hub for your listening system with less complexity.
